Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 887)
This visa enables you to relocate to Australia for permanent residence and employment. If you have previously held a 489 visa and met the eligibility criteria for the 887 visa, you can apply for the permanent 887 Visa. This visa is intended for individuals who have resided and worked in specified regional areas of Australia under a previous eligible visa.
The 887 Visa is a permanent residency visa. You must be physically present in Australia both at the time of application and when the visa is granted.
BASIC ELIGIBILITY
You must
- Hold a visa that meets the eligibility criteria.
- Reside in a specified regional area for a minimum of 2 years and engage in full-time work for at least 1 year.
- Adhere to the conditions of the eligible visa you currently hold or have held in the past.
RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS
At the time you apply for this visa you must have lived for a total of at least 2 years, as the holder of one or more eligible visas, in
- A regional or low-population growth metropolitan area if nominated by a state or territory government for your eligible visa.
- A designated area of Australia if sponsored by a family member for your eligible visa.
WORK REQUIREMENTS
When you apply for this visa you must have worked full-time for at least 12 months as the holder of one or more eligible skilled visas
- In a regional or low-population growth metropolitan area if nominated by a state or territory government for your eligible visa.
- In a designated area of Australia if sponsored by a family member for your eligible visa.
Full-time work constitutes 35 hours per week. You may fulfill this requirement by combining work from concurrent part-time employment. Your work can be in your nominated occupation or any other occupation.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
At time the time we make a decision on your application you must
- Demonstrate functional English proficiency.
- Pay the second instalment of the visa application charge for your eligible visa.
- Pay the second instalment of the visa application charge upon request.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENT
You must be of good character to visit or live in Australia. This means you must pass the character test, and remain of good character.
The character requirements, outlined in section 501 of the Migration Act 1958, are essential criteria for assessing whether an individual is of good character.

You can apply for this visa online. You, and any family members who are applying with you, must be in Australia when you apply.
WITH THIS VISA YOU CAN

- Sponsor your relatives to immigrate to Australia.
- Travel to and from Australia for a period of 5 years.
- If eligible, apply for Australian citizenship.
Newly arrived residents may be subject to waiting periods before accessing certain Australian Government payments and benefits.
HOW LONG CAN YOU STAY
- This visa grants permanent residency in Australia, allowing indefinite stay.
- The visa includes a travel component valid for 5 years from the date of grant.
- For citizenship eligibility, permanent residence commences on the visa grant date if the applicant is in Australia.
INCLUDE FAMILY
You can include eligible family members in your application if they currently hold an eligible visa. Each eligible family member must be included at the time of application submission; additions cannot be made after lodgment.
You may include family members who no longer meet the standard definition of a member of the family unit, provided they hold an eligible visa granted on the basis of their previous inclusion in your family unit. For example, if a child has turned 23 since being granted an eligible visa, you can still include them in your application.
All family members included in your application must meet the health and character requirements set by the Australian Government. Family members not accompanying you to Australia may also need to meet these requirements.
NEWBORN CHILDREN
If you have had a child born in Australia since the grant of your current visa, it's crucial to inform us about your child before lodging this application. You should also inquire about the appropriate steps to take if your child is born after the grant of your current visa. If we haven't linked your child's current visa to their passport, you won't be able to lodge their application online. Please ensure to address this matter promptly to avoid any delays in the application process.
